Two back-to-back sales will take place at Hindman this September. Native American Art: The Lifetime Collection of Forrest Fenn, Part II on September 8 features 172 lots of Native American art, highlighting Fenn’s iconic collection of strike-a-light bags and beadwork, as well as the remaining selection of dolls (from the Part I sale). Also included in the sale will be large-scale pottery, baskets and historically significant photography. On September 9 is the Native American Art auction, offering a vast selection of Kiowa beadwork, Navajo weavings, and Indigenous pottery and jewelry. Headlining the sale is a phenomenal late 19th-century child’s Beaded Hide Shirt and Leggings (est. $30/50,000); and a circa 1880 Kiowa Beaded Dispatch Case, featuring ochre-dyed fringe on the opening and bottom seam and an abstract floral pattern (est. $15/25,000).

“In presenting the Forrest Fenn collection, it’s been a pleasure to hear the memories and stories that cement his legacy. Aside from his famous treasure, the reminiscing seems to always come back to simple visits and talks with Fenn in his home,” says Danica Farnand, Hindman’s vice president of Native American art. “Front and center of these memories is his den, highlighted by the thoughtful presentation of his collection. One of the most memorable features and focal points in the room was the wall of Southern Plains strike-a-light bags. The bright colors of the beads played off of one another as they were carefully placed, as if in an intricate puzzle, on the wall. Following the momentum and strong performance of a small grouping of these strike-a-lights in [the Part I sale], we are eager to present a greater offering in Part II.”

The Native American Art sale the next day will have lots from coast to coast. “We are particularly thrilled to be highlighting the Great Lakes Region through the collection of Robert Streett of St. Louis, Missouri,” Farnand adds. “Streett carefully curated his collection to show life in this region, from beadwork and clothing to weapons and utilitarian objects. Alongside the Streett collection, we will be offering eye-catching Navajo and Mexican weavings, including textiles from the Collection of Warren Ehrlich.” Noteworthy lots from the Ehrlich collection, she says, include a Navajo Late Classic Serape from 1870, estimated to fetch between $6,000 and $8,000; as well as a pair of late 19th-century Mexican Late Classic Saltillo Serape's, estimated at $5,000 to $7,000.
